After all of the frustration with my iBook G4 not booting up and producing various obstacles for my work and play, with the help of Apple over the phone and online, we seem to have isolated the problem to the Logic board… yes… a Fried Logic Board. Seemingly this is no suprise to some of my Mac friends on the net, aswel as this I’ve found countless articles
about problems with Logic Boards in iBook G4’s in the past while.Lucky for me Apple are making an exception and are going to repair the laptop free of charge outside the warranty period, because I have bought so much hardware and software from them in the past year.Aswel as this, I’ve found that my battery has been recalled due to overheating problems and fire safety concerns just like many others…
I’m not complaining though, I am after getting a years use from that battery and I’ve just recieved a shiney new on from UPS thismorning with the full 5 hours of battery life (I’d like to see Dell top that).
I’m pretty impressed with the service actually, there were no Apple repair centers anywhere near me so Apple paid UPS to pick up my laptop and bring it to http://www.mactivate.ie for repair last week so I’m hoping to have it back any day now.I really can’t take this whole “Windows” thing anymore, I’m the kind of person who stays clear of MS Office unless I have to use it for a specific project…… what would we do without iLife & iWork?

contacted apple last week, no exception for my crashed iBook (12″ G4 800)
but I didn’t mention that I bought some of their fine products this year (a minimac intel dual-core and 23″ cinema display for me, for my company a new Xserve + raid, 2 G5’s & 3 macBooks)
maybe I have to buy more…

Ouch….. thats a killer. I’m one of those people who just keep annoying them, so perhaps its worth another go? You never know, you might just be lucky…. hopefully.
Im considering upgrading to Macbook or Macbook Pro at the moment but I really dont know what to do.
Keep an eye on my Blog, I’ll probably post details of my iBook for sale about a week before I put it on eBay just in case anyone is interested:

Well, my ibook 12″ 1.2ghz just died. Fried Logic board and they want $605can to replace not counting labour. As you can imagine, I am pissed. It is beyond the warranty and I did not purchase the extra warranty as I find it unreasonable for a logic board to simply die on you a year and a half after purchase. Unfortunately, I am in a now questioning Apple products. Why should I make the same mistake…I have an IBM Thinkpad that is 6 yrs old and it still runs on windows and it has been beaten around. Not OSX obviously, but still quite usable. Apple didn’t want to budge and cover the logic board. It is of serial number UV447 vintage and beware to all who have similar computers, buy their goddamn extended warranty and get rid of it before the end. As for staying with Apple, I have big doubts !

The same thing happened to me recently with my ibook. I called apple and after being put on hold for ages (not looking forward to seeing my mobile bill this month) I got through to someone who said I was out of warranty, I told him it was a logic board issue (which it was as I had done a lot of research), I eventually convinced him of this and after being on hold for ages he gave me a CS code and said that an Irish agent would repair it for free due to the extended warranty that the logic board problem gives. Check out this link
http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/
I never bought any extended warranty from apple and my machine is almost three years old so if they’re repairing mine they should definetly repair yours?

My Logic Board just went out on me last month and the runaround from the manufacturer is very disappointing. As Im on the phone with a “product specialist” politely doing nothing to help me Im wondering who out there makes a comparable product line I can replace my Mac with. I think that if the old iBooks have the same problem as the new ones they should also include these in the replacement program they have in place. This would make me very happy about Mac again. As it stands now Im going to have to pay around 500 dollars to get a computer Ive already put thousands of dollars into to work properly. And I wonder how long the next Logic Board will last.

Man, I hear you. $400-$500 for a new logic board. Now I don’t know much about how all this works, but could an overheating battery damage hardware components… say, a logic board? I’d be all about getting it fixed by Apple at cost…

yeah man!

My sister has an ibook G4 12″ and the logic board just went out in it also. I have heard about G3 ibooks having problems but I can’t believe they didn’t solve the problem with the g4 ones. My whole family is Apple including me a systems admin…which is hard to find sometimes ..believe me….they had better fix it free of charge as it is out of warranty..it is only about a year and half old..i’ll let you know how it goes.

my G3 crashed six times — after the sixth they replaced it with a g4 — this was after MONTHS of pleading…18 months later now the G4 logic board has crashed. I have no idea what to do – it’s out of warranty. Do i spend the dough, only to have it crash again in two months? I feel like this problem could really dent in Apple if it’s THIS widespread…they could feel it in the next several years….

Hi there,
I just purchased a G4 on ebay and fear I got a lemon…no warranty was offered by the seller so I feel it is my own stupid fault for not checking first, I guess I trusted that any faults would be disclosed before purchase..!
The issue is – when the battery gets to about 70-80%, [usually after about 1.5 hrs use, word processing only, capacity seems to be 3.5hrs max], the whole unit just dies and won’t start until I plug it in. Then when I turn it back on the clock has reset the time and date.
Is this a simple battery issue and should I just buy a new one? I just stumbled onto this page looking for help so I apologise if this is not really your domain
Any help would be appreciated. I bought the thing for travel and now I’m worried it is just going to be useless extra weight [not to mention a waste of money!]
Thanks
Sarah

Hi there,
I have a iBook G3 that I purchased 3 1/2 years ago and the Logic Board just blew. I called Apple Support and they stated they couldn’t help because the extension program only runs until 3 years from the purchase of the laptop.
I’m not interested in replacing the Logic Board but what I would like to do is to take out the hard drive and install it into a unit which I can access the data. It’s been about 1 year since I’ve backed up my data and I have pictures on the harddrive that I would like to recover. Can anyone offer any advice?
Thanks much,
Maria

Thanks

This is amazing! I am shocked by the amount of responses. The Logic board problem is obviously very common. I think that perhaps its time to do something about it.
Maria as far as the hard drive issue, well heres a good site that maybe will be of some help to you?
Powerbook medic
There was another site out there that I can remember perfectly however, I cant find it! Keep searching though! I know that there is a site out there with a clear tutorial to do this. Perhaps you should try asking around on Mac-Forums? I have always found them very friendly and helpfull.
Please let me know how things go for you.

So anyone got any updates about how they got on?
June 20, 2007 at 3:06 pm
Hi there,
I purchased my iBook G4 a while ago (August, 2004) and the laptop had been working fine until about May of 2007 when the logic board decided to crap the bed. It works fine, but I have to run the power straight from the ac adapter and the battery is of no use now. There isn’t an warranty on it and the 400$ for replacement plus 137$/hr labor is ridiculous.
I tried to research the logic board program, but my laptop is out of the sell date window. I also tried to research a purchase of a logic board and i would install it myself, but that was just more expensive (500$).
I just hate having to turn off my computer to bring it into another room in my house.
Got any suggestions?
Dan

Dan – thats a real pain. I know how you feel. Believe me, I been there and done that.
I know that your Mac isn’t getting any younger but I would suggest maybe contacting Apple and explaining to them. Tell them how you feel about the quality of the unit that you bought and make it clear that you will be taking it into consideration before your next computer purchase.
This is usually more effective than you would expect!
It is worth a try.

Thanks tigerplug,
I got a friend who works at an apple specialist store. I’ve been talking to her recently about it and she is nice enough to look around for me for some logic boards (new and used).
I’m going to call Apple tomorrow. Do you suggest I call Apple directly? I suppose calling a retailer wouldn’t do too much help.
Thanks again,
Dan

I have the same problem with my G4 recently, I have called up my country apple dealer and he said there is no such exchange programme for G4, can your case reference so that I can complaint again to local service center and demand them for logic board replacement, i don’t want to buy a new one since it will cost me over thousand of dollars here. Any other advise that you can offer me is highly appreciated, regards

I know this thread is almost a year old, yet I still want to talk to people like myself who seemed to have went through the same “tragic” incident happening to them. The famous but not so gentle logic board deciding to say goodbye on their ibook G4. I did talk to apple, in fact I am on hold with them again as I am writing this. They don’t seem to care that much. I know my mac is certainly starting to show its age, but this is still painful. I have another mac desktop who had the same thing happening to it! Is it time to switch to PC!!! It frustrates me that I have all these graphic softwares that have cost me thousands of dollars, and now I am forced to buy another mac.
July 29, 2008 at 11:35 pm
By The way, my ibook is less than 3 years old.

Hello, where did all the cheated, frustrated mac victims go! am I the only one, or has my problem become So Passé!!!!! or have I been so naive for so many years to think taht apple actually did offer preferential treat to its loyal customers! hummm….it makes one think! I read somewhere: “Loyal customers are the most important asset of any company–more important than land, patents, equipment, or buildings.” not too sure this hold truth for apple any more.
July 29, 2008 at 11:50 pm
By the way…I’m still on hold with….apple
July 29, 2008 at 11:51 pm
I have been on hold now for over an hour, the agent is quite nice, keeps on coming back to check if I am still waiting….yepee I am, I was and I….will be…..waiting.

getting ready to purchase a G4, 700MHz, 768 MB, 14″ iBook and have been told the logic board is bad. since most of these posts are pre-2007, has there been any economical/perm fixes to this issue other than replacing the logic board (have read everything from heating the GPU w/candle/heat gun/etc. to “re-solder” the chipset to reflow/reballing service (from http://www.superiorrball.com) for around $60/reball and $50 for reflow).
any updated info on resolving this issue is greatly appreciated. thanks joe

I had the exact same problem. I’d had the computer for 14 months when the logic board failed. I did some research and found that many, many people both with the previous G3 and the G4 (my model) also had the same exact problem. I spent hours on the phone.
I finally wrote them a letter saying that they knew there was a problem with those logic boards and used them anyway. If they didn’t give me the part for free, I was going to tell everyone who would listen my story. They politely told me to get lost.
I wasn’t going to spend $500 to put a faulty part right back into my computer just to have it die again. The net was full of stories of people who did just that and had it crash again 3 months later.
I bought a PC which still runs great. Sorry Apple, you lost my business. I sincerely hope that others head my story and stay with PC’s. Apple screwed me and I’ll never be quite about it.

I have an ibook G4 which was hanging during installation of leopard due to overheating.
The overheating problem is not a fried logic board, it’s a problem with the fan power supply.
I’ve mounted a CPU fan over the ibook cooling fan & have managed to install Leopard without it hanging.
I’m now going to try and trace the fault & will do a follow up post if successful
