I have an ibook G4 which was hanging during installation of leopard due to overheating.
The overheating problem is not a fried logic board, it's a problem with the fan power supply.
I've mounted a CPU fan over the ibook cooling fan & have managed to install Leopard without it hanging.
I'm now going to try and trace the fault & will do a follow up post if successful

I had the exact same problem. I'd had the computer for 14 months when the logic board failed. I did some research and found that many, many people both with the previous G3 and the G4 (my model) also had the same exact problem. I spent hours on the phone.

I finally wrote them a letter saying that they knew there was a problem with those logic boards and used them anyway. If they didn't give me the part for free, I was going to tell everyone who would listen my story. They politely told me to get lost.

I wasn't going to spend $500 to put a faulty part right back into my computer just to have it die again. The net was full of stories of people who did just that and had it crash again 3 months later.

I bought a PC which still runs great. Sorry Apple, you lost my business. I sincerely hope that others head my story and stay with PC's. Apple screwed me and I'll never be quite about it.

getting ready to purchase a G4, 700MHz, 768 MB, 14" iBook and have been told the logic board is bad. since most of these posts are pre-2007, has there been any economical/perm fixes to this issue other than replacing the logic board (have read everything from heating the GPU w/candle/heat gun/etc. to "re-solder" the chipset to reflow/reballing service (from www.superiorrball.com) for around $60/reball and $50 for reflow).

any updated info on resolving this issue is greatly appreciated. thanks joe

Hello, where did all the cheated, frustrated mac victims go! am I the only one, or has my problem become So Passé!!!!! or have I been so naive for so many years to think taht apple actually did offer preferential treat to its loyal customers! hummm....it makes one think! I read somewhere: "Loyal customers are the most important asset of any company--more important than land, patents, equipment, or buildings." not too sure this hold truth for apple any more.

I know this thread is almost a year old, yet I still want to talk to people like myself who seemed to have went through the same "tragic" incident happening to them. The famous but not so gentle logic board deciding to say goodbye on their ibook G4. I did talk to apple, in fact I am on hold with them again as I am writing this. They don't seem to care that much. I know my mac is certainly starting to show its age, but this is still painful. I have another mac desktop who had the same thing happening to it! Is it time to switch to PC!!! It frustrates me that I have all these graphic softwares that have cost me thousands of dollars, and now I am forced to buy another mac.

I have the same problem with my G4 recently, I have called up my country apple dealer and he said there is no such exchange programme for G4, can your case reference so that I can complaint again to local service center and demand them for logic board replacement, i don't want to buy a new one since it will cost me over thousand of dollars here. Any other advise that you can offer me is highly appreciated, regards

Thanks tigerplug,

I got a friend who works at an apple specialist store. I've been talking to her recently about it and she is nice enough to look around for me for some logic boards (new and used).

I'm going to call Apple tomorrow. Do you suggest I call Apple directly? I suppose calling a retailer wouldn't do too much help.

Thanks again,

Dan - thats a real pain. I know how you feel. Believe me, I been there and done that.

I know that your Mac isn't getting any younger but I would suggest maybe contacting Apple and explaining to them. Tell them how you feel about the quality of the unit that you bought and make it clear that you will be taking it into consideration before your next computer purchase.

This is usually more effective than you would expect!
It is worth a try.

Hi there,

I purchased my iBook G4 a while ago (August, 2004) and the laptop had been working fine until about May of 2007 when the logic board decided to crap the bed. It works fine, but I have to run the power straight from the ac adapter and the battery is of no use now. There isn't an warranty on it and the 400$ for replacement plus 137$/hr labor is ridiculous.

I tried to research the logic board program, but my laptop is out of the sell date window. I also tried to research a purchase of a logic board and i would install it myself, but that was just more expensive (500$).

I just hate having to turn off my computer to bring it into another room in my house.

Got any suggestions?

This is amazing! I am shocked by the amount of responses. The Logic board problem is obviously very common. I think that perhaps its time to do something about it.

Maria as far as the hard drive issue, well heres a good site that maybe will be of some help to you?

Powerbook medic

There was another site out there that I can remember perfectly however, I cant find it! Keep searching though! I know that there is a site out there with a clear tutorial to do this. Perhaps you should try asking around on Mac-Forums? I have always found them very friendly and helpfull.

Please let me know how things go for you. :)

Same here. My logic board went a year ago, just out of warranty. It won't charge. Would you send me the email as well. I've called apple countless times to no avail

Thanks

Hi there,

I have a iBook G3 that I purchased 3 1/2 years ago and the Logic Board just blew. I called Apple Support and they stated they couldn't help because the extension program only runs until 3 years from the purchase of the laptop.

I'm not interested in replacing the Logic Board but what I would like to do is to take out the hard drive and install it into a unit which I can access the data. It's been about 1 year since I've backed up my data and I have pictures on the harddrive that I would like to recover. Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks much,
Maria

Hi there,

I just purchased a G4 on ebay and fear I got a lemon...no warranty was offered by the seller so I feel it is my own stupid fault for not checking first, I guess I trusted that any faults would be disclosed before purchase..!

The issue is - when the battery gets to about 70-80%, [usually after about 1.5 hrs use, word processing only, capacity seems to be 3.5hrs max], the whole unit just dies and won't start until I plug it in. Then when I turn it back on the clock has reset the time and date.

Is this a simple battery issue and should I just buy a new one? I just stumbled onto this page looking for help so I apologise if this is not really your domain :-)

Any help would be appreciated. I bought the thing for travel and now I'm worried it is just going to be useless extra weight [not to mention a waste of money!]

Thanks
